How to Find Your Appliance Model Number (Washer, Dryer, Dishwasher, Fridge, Range)

Sources checked: October 21, 2026. This guide summarizes the manufacturer pages linked at the end. CodeFix Home is independent of all appliance brands, and this guide has not been reviewed by a licensed appliance technician.

Quick answer

The model and serial number are printed on a label (rating plate) attached to the appliance. On washers and dryers it is usually around the door opening; on refrigerators, inside the fresh-food section on a side wall; on dishwashers, on the tub frame or door edge; on ranges, on the oven or drawer frame. The exact spot differs by brand — for example, Whirlpool puts dishwasher labels on the left of the tub frame, while LG puts them on the right side of the door. Take a clear photo of the label: you’ll need the full model number to match error codes, manuals and parts.

Why the model number matters for error codes

The same code can mean different things on different model families of the same brand, and some codes exist only on certain series. The full model number (not just the brand or the marketing name on the front) lets you open the right owner’s manual and the right support page. It is also the first thing a manufacturer or technician will ask for.

Whirlpool-family brands include Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana and JennAir. “—” means the brand’s page does not give a written location for that appliance. Individual models can differ; your owner’s manual is the final word.

Samsung and GE

  • Samsung washers and dryers: Samsung’s North American guide says front-load models usually carry the label around the door frame or door seal, and if it isn’t there, on a label at the back. Top-load models have it on the back. On Samsung’s combined Laundry Hub units, the main serial number is on the front, under either door.
  • GE Appliances: GE publishes a separate label finder for each product type (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges, wall ovens, microwaves). GE notes that GE and GE Profile model numbers always begin and end with a letter — a quick way to tell the model number apart from the serial number.

If you can’t find the label

  1. Use a flashlight and look at every edge revealed when the door, lid or drawer is open.
  2. Check the back panel or sides — some models (for example, some LG top-load and Samsung top-load washers) have the label at the rear. Unplug the appliance and move it carefully; never move a gas appliance yourself.
  3. Look in the original paperwork: the owner’s manual, purchase receipt or warranty registration.
  4. If you registered the appliance with the manufacturer, the model is in your online account.
  5. Some connected (Wi-Fi) appliances show the model in the brand’s app.

Reading the label

  • Model number (often “MOD”, “Model” or “M/N”): identifies the product family and version. This is what you use for codes and manuals.
  • Serial number (“SER”, “S/N”): identifies your individual unit; manufacturers use it for warranty and recalls.
  • Copy every character exactly. Letters such as O and the number 0 are easy to confuse — a photo avoids mistakes.
