Washer Door Lock Error Codes by Brand (Whirlpool F5 E2, LG dE, Samsung dS/dE)

Quick answer
Door-lock codes mean the washer can’t confirm that the door is closed and locked, so it won’t start or continue: F5 E2 on Whirlpool front-loaders, dE, dE1 or dE2 on LG front-loaders, and dS, d5, dE, dL, LO, FL and related codes on Samsung. Close the door firmly, check that no laundry is caught in the opening, reduce an overloaded drum and reset the washer. If the code keeps returning, the manufacturers point to service — a bent or broken latch is not a DIY repair.
Safety first: never force a locked door open — the drum may contain hot water or still be spinning. Don’t try to bypass, tape or modify the lock; it’s a safety device. Unplug the washer before looking closely at the latch area. Safety disclaimer
Scope of this guide: the Whirlpool and LG pages we cite cover front-load washer door locks. Samsung’s list covers door codes for its washers in general and includes a separate “Add Door” code. Top-load lid-lock codes are not covered here — check your top-loader’s manual for those.
Door-lock codes by brand
| Brand | Code | Meaning (per manufacturer) |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool (front-load) | F5 E2 | The door is not locking properly |
| LG (front-load) | dE | The door was unable to lock; LG says a reset usually fixes it |
| LG (front-load) | dE1 | The door is not closed properly — often laundry caught between the door and the gasket |
| LG (front-load) | dE2 | The door is closed but not locked — too much laundry, items stuck at the gasket, or a bent or broken door latch |
| Samsung | dS, d5, FL, LO, L0, dE, dE1, dE2, dC1, dL, 1 dC, 1dC4, 1dC1 | Door error — the door is not detected as closed and locked |
| Samsung | dC | Door error on some models but an unbalanced-load error on others — check your manual |
| Samsung | ddC, dC3 | Add Door error (the small door for adding items) |
Codes vary by model — find your model number and confirm in your manual.
Safe checks, in order
- Close the door firmly. Whirlpool notes a door can look closed without being latched. On Samsung models with an Add Door, close that too.
- Check the opening. Look for laundry or the gasket caught between the door and the frame — LG names this as a common cause of dE1 and dE2.
- Reduce the load. Leave room for clothes to tumble. Whirlpool and LG both list overloading as a cause.
- Reset the washer. Whirlpool: unplug for 5 minutes. LG: turn the washer off, unplug it or switch off its breaker, press and hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power. Samsung: power off for 2–3 minutes, then restart the cycle.
- Look, don’t fix. With the washer unplugged, you can look at whether the latch hook appears bent or broken. LG lists a bent or broken latch as a cause of dE2; replacing it is a job for service.
When to call for service
- The code returns after the checks and reset — Whirlpool, LG and Samsung all point to service at this stage.
- The latch hook or door hinge looks bent or broken.
- The door stays locked with water inside after the cycle is cancelled and the washer is powered off.
- You see damage to the door gasket or wiring near the lock.
