Washer Won’t Drain? Drain Error Codes by Brand (Whirlpool F9 E1, Samsung 5C, LG OE)

Quick answer
Drain codes mean the washer couldn’t empty in the expected time: F9 E1 on Whirlpool front-loaders, nd, 5E/SE or 5C/SC on Samsung, and OE on LG. The usual causes are the same across brands: a kinked or badly installed drain hose, a clogged drain pump filter (front-loaders), too many suds, or a failing pump. Check the hose first, then clean the pump filter — carefully, because the water can be hot and will spill.
Safety first: unplug the washer before opening the filter panel. After a hot cycle, wait — Samsung suggests about an hour — so the water can cool. Have towels and a shallow pan ready; a full drum can release several gallons. Safety disclaimer
Drain codes by brand
| Brand | Code | Meaning (per manufacturer) |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool (front-load) | F9 E1 | Long drain time |
| Samsung | nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC, 1 5C | Washer not draining |
| LG | OE (also E03 / E21 on some models) | Washer can’t drain |
Codes vary by model — find your model number and confirm in your manual.
Step 1: Check the drain hose
| What to check | Whirlpool (F9 E1 page) | Samsung (drain guide) |
|---|---|---|
| Hose depth in standpipe | No more than 4.5″ | 6–8″ |
| Drain height | Maximum 96″ | 18–96″ (24–35″ for a laundry basin) |
| Sealing | Don’t tape the hose into the drain — an air gap prevents siphoning | Don’t use a hose extension kit |
Brands specify different hose depths. Follow the figure in your own model’s installation instructions.
In all cases, make sure the hose isn’t kinked, crushed behind the washer, or blocked. Samsung also recommends checking that the washer is level.
Step 2: Clean the drain pump filter (front-loaders)
Samsung notes that only front-load washers have a user-accessible pump filter. Location varies: LG’s is behind a service panel at the bottom left; on some Whirlpool models it’s behind the bottom drawer or panel. The general LG procedure:
- Unplug the washer and open the service panel.
- Place a shallow pan and towels underneath. Pull out the small drain tube, remove its cap and let the water drain, emptying the pan as needed.
- Turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it. Clean it with a soft brush and warm water, and brush debris out of the filter opening.
- Reinstall the filter clockwise until it stops, cap and reattach the drain tube, close the panel, and run a tub-clean cycle to see whether the code clears.
Whirlpool also suggests cleaning the drain holes in the door seal on front-loaders.
Step 3: Rule out suds and listen to the pump
- Too many suds can trigger LG’s OE code. Use the right HE detergent amount and run a tub-clean cycle.
- LG suggests running a high-speed spin-only cycle and listening: you should hear the pump hum within about 15 seconds. No hum suggests a repair is needed.
- Samsung’s general reset: turn the washer off for 2–3 minutes, then restart.
When to call a professional
- The pump doesn’t run (no hum) or makes a grinding noise.
- The code returns after the hose and filter are clear.
- Samsung: a screw is missing from the hose holder — Samsung recommends service.
- Water is leaking from under the washer or near electrical parts.
