LG Dryer d80, d90, d95 Codes: What They Mean and What to Do Next

Quick answer
On LG dryers, d75, d80, d90 and d95 mean the exhaust duct is restricted by roughly 75%, 80%, 90% or 95%, according to LG. The dryer still runs, but drying takes longer. On gas models, LG notes d80 can also indicate a lack of gas. Clean the lint filter, check the duct behind the dryer and the outside flap, and if the code comes back, have the duct inside the wall cleaned and checked against LG’s length limits.
Safety first: unplug an electric dryer before moving it. On a gas dryer, never disconnect or adjust the gas connection yourself. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas utility or emergency services from outside. Safety disclaimer
What each code means
| Code | Approximate exhaust restriction (per LG) |
|---|---|
| d75 | About 75% |
| d80 | About 80% (on gas models, can also mean a lack of gas) |
| d90 | About 90% |
| d95 | About 95% |
| 2 or 4 bars on Flow Sense | Severely restricted exhaust |
LG’s own checklist, summarized
- Inside the dryer: remove lint from the filter between loads, wash the lint filter with warm water and a soft brush, and dry smaller loads.
- Behind the dryer: check that the duct isn’t crushed, kinked, torn or loosely connected, and that it isn’t bunched up like a spring.
- Outside: make sure the exhaust flaps open fully (running an Air Dry cycle helps you check) and remove any visible lint.
- Inside the walls: if the code persists, LG recommends hiring a dryer duct cleaner and asking them for the vent length and the number of 90-degree turns.
What LG’s code page doesn’t tell you
1. How long your vent is allowed to be
LG’s error code page mentions that long runs and many elbows cause problems, but doesn’t give limits. LG’s separate venting page does: for 4-inch rigid metal duct, the maximum length drops as you add 90-degree elbows and depends on the wall cap size. With no elbows, it lists 65 feet with a 4-inch wall cap (55 feet with a 2½-inch cap); with four elbows, 28 feet (22 feet). Note that the same page also states a simpler “deduct 6 feet per elbow” rule that doesn’t match its own table — when in doubt, use the table in your model’s installation manual. Compare with the building code in dryer vent length limits.
2. How to clear the code
LG does not describe a separate step to clear d-codes. The dryer measures airflow while it runs, so the practical test is to fix the restriction and run a normal cycle. LG’s general control reset (power off, unplug or switch off the breaker, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power) restarts the controls, but it does not fix a blocked duct — if the code returns, the restriction is still there.
3. The gas-dryer exception
Because d80 can also indicate a lack of gas on gas models, a gas dryer showing d80 with a clean vent may have a supply issue. Checking that the gas shutoff valve is open is a reasonable first look, but any work on the gas line itself is for a licensed professional.
Decision path if the code keeps coming back
- Lint filter washed and dry? → If not, start there.
- Transition duct straight, intact and connected? → Replace a crushed or damaged duct.
- Outside flap opens fully, no lint? → Clean the hood.
- Run length and elbows within LG’s limits for your model? → If not, the run needs to be shortened or rerouted by a professional.
- Everything above is fine? → Book a dryer duct cleaning; if the code persists after that, contact LG service.
When to stop and call a professional
- The duct runs inside walls or to the roof.
- You have a gas dryer showing d80 and the vent is clear.
- You smell burning or the dryer cabinet is unusually hot.
- The code persists after professional duct cleaning (contact LG service).
